Proxy Access to Stanford-Restricted Sources

Configuring Netscape 6.x/7.x/Mozilla 1.x on Windows

[Return to Stanford Proxy Home]

Note: Versions of Netscape 6 earlier than 6.1 reportedly do not work with Stanford's proxy server. Make sure you are using at least Netscape version 6.1. The 1.x version of the Mozilla browser is equivalent to Netscape 6.x and is configured the same way.

SELECT NETSCAPE/MOZILLA PREFERENCES

  1. Start Netscape or Mozilla if it isn't already running

    .
  2. Click Edit in the menubar to open the Edit menu.

  3. Click Preferences... to bring up the Preferences dialog box.

TURN ON PROXYING

  1. Click the small triangle (or small + for Mozilla) next to Advanced in the Category: box to display the advanced configuration options.

  2. Click on Proxies to display proxy configuration options in the right side of the Preferences window.

  3. Click the Automatic proxy configuration URL radio button to make it the selected choice.

  4. Enter this URL in the box beneath the radio button:

    http://library.stanford.edu/apcproxy/suproxy.pac
  5. Click Reload and then click OK.

HOW PROXYING WORKS

  • Your browser is now configured to use Stanford's proxy server for resources that are restricted to Stanford users. Any other Internet connections will not go through the proxy server.

  • When you connect to a restricted resource, you will see an intermediate screen that provides a link you can follow to the remote site. If you have problems getting to any pages on the site, please fill out this problem report form.

TURNING PROXYING OFF

  • You shouldn't need to turn proxying off unless you are using a laptop that is sometimes connected through the Stanford network and sometimes connected from off-campus.
  • If you need to turn proxying off for any reason, simply return to the Preferences dialog box and bring up the Proxies options as described above. Click Direct connection to the Internet to make it the selected choice, then click OK.
