Introduction

Iakov Chernikhov.

Konstruktslia Arkhitekturnykhi Mashinnykh Form.
Leningrad: Izdanie Leningradskogo obshchsetva Arkhitektorov, 1931.
Acquired through the Irene Burnside Sheldon Fund.

This constructivist treatise, written primarily in Russian with German and French title pages, promotes the virtues of geometric shapes and their place in daily life. The illustrations amount to a veritable vocabulary of geometric forms presented in a progression from familiar two-dimensional to complex three-dimensional forms. The parade of visual illustrations includes El-Lissitzky-inspired shapes, individual machine-like parts, elaborate factory and industrial machinery, and complex architectural structures. Each image adheres to the precise and utilitarian aesthetics advocated by the politics of post-1917 revolutionary Russia. This volume includes the original decorative covers.
