Introduction

Paul Sandby.

Windsor Castle and Eton College: -six etched plates with aquatint.
Acquired in part through the Kenyon Law Starling and
Robert L. Goldman Funds.

[London, 1776-77.]

Sandby was one of Britain's foremost landscape draftsmen in the mid-eighteenth century. His work typically combines topographical accuracy, sensitivity to e∂ects of light, and meticulously observed figure groups, to create the sense of a society in harmony with its surroundings. Windsor Castle and its park was a favorite subject of Sandby over the course of several decades. In the late 1770s he used the recently invented medium of aquatint, which enabled him to imitate the e∂ect of watercolor washes in his prints.
