Introduction

Harriet Doerr.

Supplementary Papers.
Gift of Martha Doerr Toppin.

Harriet Doerr first enrolled at Stanford University in 1927. However, she left school after her junior year to marry Albert Doerr and raise a family and did not return until 1977, following her husband's death. She then completed her degree in European history. Doerr extended her studies into the field of creative writing and was awarded a Stegner fellowship in 1979. In 1982, she won the Henfield Foundation Award for a group of short stories that led to the publication of her first novel, Stones for Ibarra, two years later. Written under a National Endowment for the Arts grant, the book went on to win the American Book Award for First Fiction. In 1990, she published a book of short stories, Under an Aztec Sun. Her second novel, Consider This, Señora, was released in 1993. In 1995, she published another collection of short stories, Tiger in the Grass: Stories and Other Inventions. Her daughter, Martha Doerr Toppin, assembled the Supplementary Papers after her mother's death. The nine large boxes of materials contain manuscripts, correspondence, printed documents, and photographs related to the creative work and life Harriet Doerr.
