Introduction

Provincial Poetry 1789-1839: British Verse Printed in the Provinces.

This collection of 302 books of poetry supplements and expands Stanford's acquisition in 1996 of a 1548-item collection of Romantic verse. The collection is predominantly early nineteenth-century works, though forty-six are eighteenth-century imprints, of which eight are su∂iciently rare that they are absent from the definitive English Short-Title Catalogue (EST), and another twenty-nine titles though in EST are not included in the largest microfilm and electronic collection of eighteenth-century imprints. The Provincial Poetry collection reveals much about the wider social, aesthetic and political issues relating to the Romantic poets.
