Introduction

Archive of Printed and Manuscript Papers from the Library of the General Board of Health, 1848-1858.

A collection of some six hundred printed letters, manuscripts, and documents relating to the implementation of the Public Health Act passed by the British Parliament in 1848. Sponsored by Edwin Chadwick and the Earl of Shaftesbury, the act addressed concerns over water supply and water-borne diseases, such as cholera. The materials are closely connected with sanitary reform in London and complement the working library of Sir Joseph Bazalgette (1819-1891), the chief engineer who designed and implemented London's drainage and embankment system.
