Introduction

Walker Family.

Civil War Letters, 1862-1864.
Gift of Dr. John Hunt Walker.

This collection consists of two sets of letters written by soldiers in the Union Army to family members at home. The first set comprises forty-five letters from Private Hugh Harry Jones to his wife in Ohio. Jones served as a physician's assistant and corpsman in the 69th Ohio Regiment, under General Sherman on his long march through the south to Atlanta and the sea. The second set comprises seventeen letters from Sergeant George W. Heilig to his wife Catharine. Heilig served in the 151st Pennsylvania Regiment, which saw action at the Battle of Gettysburg. Both sets of letters o∂er revealing glimpses into the camp life of Union soldiers.
