Gift of the Associates of the Stanford -University Libraries.

This is a four-volume set that ranks among the most beautiful illustrated books of the eighteenth century. The volumes contain 141 plates, all from the finest French artists and designers of the day, such as Charles-Dominique-Joseph Eisen (1720-1778), Pierre-Philippe Cho∂ard (1730-1809), and Charles Monnet (1732-1808). This edition features a French translation by Antoine Banier (1673-1741) opposite the Latin text, with Banier's scholarly explications added.
