Introduction |
Scriptores latini in usum Delphini, cum notis variorum variis lectionibus, conspectu codicum et editionum et indicibus locupletissimus accurate recensiti.
Londini: [Curante et imprimente -A.J. Valpy], 1819-1830.
Acquired through the Stanford University Bookstore Fund.
This is a complete set of the famous Delphin series of Classical Latin authors, including the prospectus (dated February 1819). These editions were originally prepared in the reign of Louis XIV of France for the use of his son, the dauphin (hence the name "Delphin"). They were revised and edited from the best editions available, with extensive notes, designed to give the royal heirs a rigorous education in the Classics. The publisher of this London edition was Abraham John Valpy (1787-1854), a scholar, editor, and printer who published this series under the editorial oversight of George Dyer. Stanford's copy is still bound in its original printed boards, each volume ending on page 672, usually in the middle of a sentence or a chapter; the intent was to have the entire set rebound to the purchaser's taste. |
