Introduction

Sanjô Sanetomi kankei monjo
(Archival documents of Sanjô -Sanetomi).
Tôkyô : Hokusensha, 1997. Microfilm.

This microfilm set reproduces the personal papers and correspondence of the nobleman Sanjô Sanetomi (1837-1891), from Japan's National Diet Library. Sanjô, one of the leading political figures of the Meiji Restoration, supported the movement to overthrow the Tokugawa Shogunate (1600-1868) and restore political power to the emperor. Sanjô, along with another nobleman, Iwakura Tomomi, became a central figure of the Meiji government (1868-1912) and contributed to the building of the modern Japanese nation. Additionally, this set contains a collection of the personal papers and correspondence of Sanjô Sanetsumu (1802-1859), Sanetomi's father; those documents deal with Japan's foreign relations, especially with the United States, during the turbulent last twenty years of the Tokugawa period. This set is one of the most important primary sources for the understanding of the decision-making process of the Meiji leaders.
