Introduction

Itô Miyoji kankei monjo
(Archival documents of Itô Miyoji).
Tôkyô : Sôsendô Shuppan, 1995.-Microfilm.

This microfilm set reproduces the personal papers and correspondence of Itô Miyoji (1857-1934), from Japan's National Diet Library. Itô Miyoji, together with three other statesmen, was responsible for drafting the Meiji Constitution, Japan's first modern written constitution, which was promulgated in 1889. Of the two thousand items in this set, one-fourth consists  of correspondence between Itô Miyoji and the Meiji oligarchs, while the rest document the formulation of the Meiji Constitution. This collection is one of the essential primary sources for the study of the political and constitutional history of modern Japan.
