Introduction

Robert and William Moran.

Papers, 1900-1985.
Gift of William R. Moran.

William R. Moran graduated from Stanford in 1942 with a degree in geology. His father, Robert Moran, was granted the same degree in 1907. William Moran donated hundreds of field reports, maps, and correspondence from his father's career and his own time at Union Oil (forty-eight linear feet). Robert Moran's papers document the growth of the oil and gas industry in the early part of the twentieth century in California. He also engaged in oil production work in Mexico, Central America, and South America. William Moran's work with Union Oil encompassed oil production prospects in the United States, Australia, Costa Rica, South America, and the Pacific Islands. Collectively, these documents provide a unique look at the history of oil production over the course of nearly a century.
