Introduction |
Général Baron Couture.
Précis historique sur Passy, Boulogne, La Muette, Madrid et Bagatelle.
Bound manuscript.
Written in a clear hand by a brigadier general in Napoleon's army, this short work describes in detail, and with charm, these areas in western Paris. The author attempts to supplement Dulaure's Histoire physique, civile et morale de Paris, claiming that the Bois du Boulogne, the Jardins de Bagatelle, Passy, the château de Madrid, and La Muette were not covered adequately in this earlier work. Particular attention is paid to the gardens and trees; there is even a species list of the oaks growing in the Bois de Boulogne. This work o∂ers a personal view of nineteenth-century Paris and complements Stanford's collection on European gardens and landscape design. |
