John Smith.
Italian Scenery.
London: W. Bulmer and Co., -1796 [i.e. 1817].
Acquired through the Kenyon Law -Starling and the Hanna /Frank Lloyd Wright Funds.
This book features many of the highlights from the Grand Tour of Italy so popular in the late eighteenth century. Smith's account of his journey, written in both French and English, takes the reader to Bologna, Florence, Rome, Naples, and other Italian sites. Smith's interests include Renaissance architecture and Roman ruins, and he especially enjoys sites with literary associations, such as the dell in the Sabine hills where Horace's villa allegedly once stood. Smith executed the drawings of the views as well. The text and the plates were originally issued over the years 1792 to 1796; they are re-issued here in this edition, with an added dedicatory leaf dated Jan. 18th, 1817.
