Acquired in part through the Ross H. Chamberlain, Robert L. Goldman, the Donnell Dewey, and the Class of 1970 Funds.
The Lindisfarne Gospels is one of the most important manuscripts in the world. This facsimile copy of the manuscript, made in association with the British Library, faithfully replicates every exquisite detail and color of the original. The manuscript was written and illuminated between 715 and 720, in honor of St. Cuthbert, Bishop of Lindisfarne, who had died in 687. A masterpiece of manuscript production, it was created in the monastery of Lindisfarne, on Holy Island, o∂ the coast of modern-day Northumberland. |
