Jean de La Fontaine.
Fables de La Fontaine.
A Parme: De l'Imprimerie de la veuve Bodoni, 1814.
Acquired through the Kenyon Law Starling Fund.
This two-volume set was printed under the direction of Marguerite Bodoni, the widow of Giambattista Bodoni (1740-1813), who had been one of the most esteemed engravers and typographers of his day. Stanford's copy retains the distinctive original binding of orange paper wrappers over boards. This is a remarkable printing achievement, described variously as "one of the most beautiful of all Bodoni's works" and "édition magnifique."
