Introduction

John A. Blume.

Papers, 1903-1994.
Gift of the Estate of John A. Blume.

John A. Blume (1909-2002) received his AB in Civil Engineering in 1933 and the Degree of Engineer in 1935 from Stanford University. He returned for further study many years later and was awarded his PhD in 1967. Known as the father of earthquake engineering, Blume had a long career in construction and structural engineering. In 1945 he established John A. Blume and Associates (JAB), which soon became the preeminent consulting firm in structural and earthquake engineering. The Blume papers include subject and reference files on earthquake and earthquake-resistant design, reports and related materials on the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Plant, and photographs, slides and videotapes on earthquakes and related topics.
