English Gift Books and Literary Annuals, 1823-1857
The Collection
This collection reproduces the complete runs of 23 English gift books
and literary annuals. Between the 1820s and 1850s great popularity was
attached to annual anthologies produced in decorative bindings and illustrated
with high quality steel engravings. A popular and important feature
of
English bookselling during this period, these yearly volumes were often
given as holiday gifts and featured in their heyday contributions from
many of the foremost writers and artists of the time. Not only do they
include little-known contributions by well-known writers, they also
reflect
the tastes and social attitudes of their time. The collection reproduces
the complete texts and illustrations of the following 23 titles.
