NEW!! Habsburg Internet Links A collection of links to portals, organizations, collections, and publications having to do with the culture and history of the Habsburg monarchy and its successor states in central Europe from 1500 to the present. Affiliated with the Center for Austrian Studies, the Society for Austrian and Habsburg History, the Czechoslovak History Conference and the American Association for the Study of Hungarian History.

Deutschland.de is the "megaportal," the main gateway, to Germany's web sites. It is produced by the German Press and Information Office and is available in German, English, French, Spanish, and Russian. Organized by category, it offers a large selection of sites organized by category as well as rubrics defined by current events.

The Anthropology of German Studies is an informal network for anthropologists whose research is focused on German-speaking countries and on the German diaspora. GSN is happy to announce a new homepage, hosted within the Society of the Anthropology of Europe website.The website features a Working (collective) Anthropology of German Studies Bibliography and a collection of links and funding resources for Germanist anthropologists. It will also be home to Uli Linke's German Studies Network Newsletter (highlighting fieldwork, announcements and recent events).

The Library of Congress has published country studies as part of its "Area Handbook Program." While some are now a bit old, they all provide useful overviews of a variety of topics relating to specific countries, including historical surveys. The website presently includes handbooks for Austria (1993), East (!) Germany (1987).

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Detailed introduction to the DAAD and its programs for students and researchers. Includes annual reports and press releases as well as the latest DAAD programs - and a comprehensive list of all DAAD sub-offices.

German Historical Institute (GHI). Independent Research Institute based in Washington, D.C., and dedicated to the promotion of historical research in Germany and the U.S. Strong focus on German-American themes. Website includes access to the catalog of the GHI's library, a listing of the sponsored publications, and a calendar of events and conferences. The Institute offers recent reference guides which include a guide to the archives in DC on oral history, on scholarships etc. The Institue's bulletins are also published on the site.

World-Wide Web Virtual Library History Index. The WWW-VL History Index is an integrated international network of indexes to historical information. The Central Catalogue categorizes these indexes by a variety of chronological, topical and geographic rubrics. These include the following pages devoted to Central European and Scandinavian history:

BStU Der Bundesbeauftragte fŸr die Unterlagen des Staatssicherheitsdienstes der ehemaligen DDR - Federal Archives for documentation of the secret police activities of the former GDR.

German Unification Case Study from the German Depatment at Foothill College is a classroom activity, the purpose of which is to jointly resolve particular issues surrounding German unification. Each participant assumes a German character and takes part in a roundtable discussion. There are two discussion groups, each with a mixture of East and West Germans. The first group focuses on social issues such as abortion rights, child care and housing rights. The second group deals with issues surrounding the military, border guards and environmental protection.

NEW!! Zeitgeschichtliches Archiv In den Jahren 1945 bis 1992 wuchs im Verlag der Zeitung „Neues Deutschland“ ein enormer Fundus an thematisch geordneten Artikeln deutschsprachiger Printmedien aus Ost und West. Ca. 3 Millionen Einzeldokumente bekamen damit den Status einer in sich geschlossenen Presseausschnittssammlung. Aus dem Archiv für den alltäglichen redaktionellen Gebrauch wurde das „Zeitgeschichtliche Archiv“.

Austrian Institute of Economic Research (…sterreichisches Institut fŸr Wirtschaftsforschung)-WIFO. Founded in 1927 by F.A. von Hayek and L. von Mises, two prominent figures of the "Austrian School" of economic research, the Austrian Institute of Economic Research is a private non-profit organization. It maintains the WIFO site offering information about the Institute, bibliographic references, publications, and data pertaining to the Austrian economy. WIFO offers citations and abstracts from the Institute's library, as well as access to the Institute's publications, such as the Monatsbericht. Databases of economic data, such as the WIFO-Zeitreihen-Datenbank are also available through this site.

Looted Art website -- Research catalog on material lost from German libraries and museums as a result of World War II. This site includes a catalog of lost art works, papers and documents (German, Russian and American) on lost art works, and a "service for those interested in art" (including a collection of news releases and legal documentation).

Unabhängige Expertenkommission Schweiz - Zweiter Weltkrieg. The Independent Commission of Experts was established in December 1996 by a unanimously approved resolution of the Swiss federal assembly (parliament). Its mandate was to investigate the volume and fate of assets moved to Switzerland before, during and immediately after the Second World War from a historical and legal point of view. After a five-year period of investigative activity, the Commission presented its Final Report to the public in German (original version), French, Italian, and English. The report is accessible on internet.

Historikerkommission der Republik Österreich. The Historical Commission was established jointly by the Austrian Federal Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor, the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Speaker of the Federal Council. The Commission's mandate is to investigate and report on the whole complex of expropriations in Austria during the Nazi era and on restitution and/or compensation (including other financial or social benefits) after 1945 by the Republic of Austria. Progress reports as well as the final report are accessible through this site.

Dokumentationsarchiv des šsterreichischen Widerstandes (D…W) has established a website that provides an overview of its holdings, projects, publications, events, and coworkers.

Berlin on the Web


The Deutsche Bundesbank offers general information about the Bundesbank, German banknotes, and European monetary union, the Bundesbank's latest announcements, publications, press releases, monthly reports and speeches by senior central bankers.

Handelsblatt Interaktiv, on-line edition of this German financial newspaper, provides reports from the worlds of politics, and business. Selected main stories from the "Handelsblatt" are available.

For statistical information on Switzerland, the Bundesamt fŸr Statistik (BFS) maintains a website with press releases, statistical summaries, information about new publications and information sources, and other resources. The Schweizerisches Bundesarchiv offers publications, finding aids, statistics, and other services of information provided by the Swiss Federal Archives.
