The Gimon Conference
on French Political Economy (1650-1850) This international conference was organized by the Stanford University Libraries and the France-Stanford Center for Interdisciplinary Studies and inspired by the Gustave Gimon Collection of French Political Economy.
The conference offered a unique opportunity for dialogue among leading scholars working in the field of French political economy. Speakers came to Stanford from the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and Portugal. The Gimon Collection of French Political Economy contains works that address the scope of royal or government power, economic theory and international trade, religious theory and tolerance, colonial policies and slavery, utopian socialism and social engineering, and workers rights and labor practices. The timing of the conference coincided with the publication of an annotated catalogue of the collection. The conference was open to the public, and attendees were strongly encouraged to read the papers beforehand.
The conference organizers are grateful for the generous financial support of the Flora Family Foundation and the France-Stanford Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, and the additional sponsorship of the Stanford University Libraries Special Collections.
