Services: Reserves and Reservations

Media Reserves

The Media-Microtext Center houses the main media reserves collection for the humanities and social sciences. Instructors wishing to put media material on reserve may submit their reserve lists electronically or using the SUL 33 paper form. In either case, appropriate guidelines should be followed. The standard loan period for reserves media materials is 3 hours. Materials must be viewed in-house.

Most SITN courses can now be accessed online. SITN lecture tapes can be viewed from any computer terminal on campus which has Media Player software on it and is equipped with a sound card.

Although videos are no longer routinely provided for these courses in the Media-Microtext Center,a small number continue to be produced; they can be found in Socrates by doing a title word search on the terms "CS Course Lecture". Engineering course videotapes are available at the Engineering Library.

Media Reservations
The difference between media reservations and media reserves is the length of time for which the item is needed. Reservations withhold an item from circulation for a short-term need (e.g. a screening during class time); reserves protect a title from outside use for an entire quarter. You may use the reservation web form or email media reservations at mediaresv to submit your reservation request.

Stanford Instructors

Need to set up a screening of a film for your class?

  • Use the reservation web form or email mediamtxt to let us know media title, call number, date and period of time needed, plus your name, email, and phone number. (Note: for media in other libraries, make arrangements with the other library, not Media-Microtext.)
  • Reserve a room. There are no viewing rooms in Green Library, but Meyer Library has several classrooms where you can show videos and DVDs. For films consult Jim Kent, Coordinator of Media-Microtext Services (jimkent@stanford.edu, 725-7263). The University's Events and Labor Services provides additional projection and video services.
  • If you do not already have privileges for checking out media, go to the Privileges Desk on the 1st floor of Green Library (Mon.-Fri., 8am-5pm) to get an extended media borrowing card.

Need to put media on reserve for your class so that your students can use it in the library on their own?
