Title: Circulation Desk Assistant

Level: I

Starting wage: click here to view current undergraduate/hourly wage scale

Duties & Responsibilities: Circulation assistants work primarily at the Circulation Desk, providing circulation services to library patrons. Other tasks include reshelving materials in the stacks, shelf reading, and preparing new materials for the stacks. During evening and weekend hours, assistants will be the only staff in the library, responsible for the security of the library's collections and facilities.

Work & Attendance Expectations:

You will be expected to work your scheduled shifts (or arrange for a substitute) through the entire quarter, including exam periods. This commitment is essential to our ability to keep our doors open and provide services to our patrons. If you cannot make this commitment, please do not apply for this job!

We expect you to behave in a courteous and friendly manner when interacting with all patrons, to be on time, and to be neat and clean in appearance. You will become knowledgeable about Music Library policies and procedures and be a competent searcher using Socrates.

Experience: Library experience and music background preferred but not required.

Hours: Each assistant will have a fixed schedule (6-8 hours/week) for the quarter; at least one shift per week must be during weekday business hours when the Operations Manager is present (see below). Limited intersession hours are available; please see "Hours" on this site for more information.

Supervisor contact: Rich Powers

Application process: Not currently accepting applications.

To apply:

Visit the Music Library and pick up an application form at the Circulation Desk. Submit the completed application to the Operations Manager in person. Applications cannot be accepted by mail or email.

Scheduling procedure:

  • Each assistant will be given a blank schedule grid showing all hours that the library is open for the week.
  • Each assistant will block out the times that they are not available to work, and return the form to the Operations Manager before the end of the second week of the quarter (the deadline will be announced each quarter)
  • The Operations Manager will assign each assistant a schedule (usually 6-8 hours per week), based on the assistant's stated availability.
  • The assistant is responsible for those assigned hours through the end of final exam week; the individual must either report for the assigned shifts, or ensure that someone else is there to work in their place.
