Streaming audio databases

Currently streaming over 12,000 tracks, American Song "...include[s] songs by and about American Indians, miners, immigrants, slaves, children, pioneers, and cowboys. Included in the database are the songs of Civil Rights, political campaigns, Prohibition, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, anti-war protests and more....It encompasses the great American musical genres including country, folk, bluegrass, Western, old time, American Indian, blues, gospel, and shape note singing - combined with powerful recordings by artists such as Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Peggy Seeger, Si Kahn, Lead Belly, Sleepy LaBeef, the New Lost City Ramblers, Otis Clay, Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater, Nanci Griffith, The Lilly Brothers, Merle Travis, and many others."

“The world's largest multi-label database of Classical music recordings for listening and learning in libraries. Coverage of repertoire is increasing as new labels are added, with a particular focus on contemporary music and women composers.”

“The basis for the collection is the diverse catalogue of American music recordings by New World Records; other labels currently represented in the Database include CRI, Albany, innova, Cedille, XI, Pogus, Deep Listening and Mutable.”

"African American Song is the first online resource to document the history of African American music in an online music listening service. The collection contains a diverse range of genres such as jazz, blues, gospel, ragtime, folk songs, and narratives, among others."

Currently including 14,200+ tracks, the database plans to grow to 50,000 tracks. Offerings are a blend of contemporary and traditional world music recordings, with a focus on contemporary genres such as fusion and world beat. Labels include: Topic, Playasound, Budamusique, Air Mail Music, Manuiti, Crossing Records, Lyrichord World Music, Navras Records, and INEDIT.

 

About off-campus access:

SULAIR has been working towards solving incompatibility issues between the proxy access system and various commercial databases. Currently (as of March 2009):

Smithsonian Global Sound, Classical Music Library, African American Song, Contemporary World Music and American Song are accessible by both PC and Mac users via the proxy server set up: click here for details on setting up your proxy server

Naxos, Naxos Jazz, and DRAM are accessible by both PC and Mac users via the links at the top of this page; a separate proxy set up is not required.
