BOOK REVIEWS

The basic electronic sources for reviews have links from the library database page http://www-sul.stanford.edu/catdb/alldata.html. They are Book Review Digest Plus (1983+), Book Review Digest Retrospective (1905-1982), and Book Review Index (1965+); the digital analogs of the old Readers Guide including Expanded Academic and Academic Search Premier; and the citation indexes Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI) and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI).

In Expanded Academic and Academic Search Premier search for author of book and book title as a keyword search. Some of the results will be fulltext. You can also directly search the fulltext archives of journals that contain extensive reviews such as Speculum and The Sixteenth Century Journal.

International Medieval Bibliography Online (IMB) 1978+, indexes reviews, but I find it lamentably unreliable. Nevertheless, the easiest search is by author and title keyword in the "Free Search, Full Text" box, e.g., "Buc Rituel", yields:

BUC, Philippe Dangereux rituel. De l'histoire médiévale aux s... 2003
BUC, Philippe Rituel politique et imaginaire politique au hau... 2001
BUC, Philippe The Dangers of Ritual. Between Early Medieval T... 2001

The search "Buc Ritual" yields:

WALSHAM, Alexandra The dangers of ritual 2003
MEENS, Rob Rituelen in de Middeleeuwen. Over de gevaren en... 2002
BUC, Philippe Rituel politique et imaginaire politique au hau... 2001
BUC, Philippe The Dangers of Ritual. Between Early Medieval T... 2001
BUC, Philippe Ritual and interpretation: the early medieval c... 2000
BUC, Philippe Martyre et ritualité dans l'antiquité tardive. 1997

Book entries in IMB drawn from Bibliographie de civilisation médiévale show reviews at the end of the record:

Type: Monograph
Author: BUC, Philippe
Title of Publication: The Dangers of Ritual. Between Early Medieval Texts and Social Scientific Theory
Language of Work: English
Place: Publisher, year: Oxford/Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2001
Description: XI-272 pp. p.

REVIEW(S):

LE JAN, Régine, Annales Histoire, Sciences Sociales, 58, 2003, pp. 1378-1380
SCHMITZ, Gerhard, Deutsches Archiv für Erforschung des Mittelalters, 59, 2003, pp. 844-845

In the citation indexes use the title/keyword search in Advanced Search mode: e.g., "ti=maccormack shadows" in AHCI yields the results:

Arts & Humanities® Retrieval Results 8 out of 2776674 records matched the query below. 8 records displayed: (maccormack and shadows)

Other electronic sources may include reviews. For example, Historical Abstracts, covering the period 1450+, indexes reviews in the journals it covers. It's online coverage, however, only begins in 1965. For more information on finding book reviews and a list of the main retrospective print sources see Finding Book Reviews.

Medievo Latino, 1972+, (LOCATION: LANE RM Z6203.M4) lists reviews for books it indexes and is a basic reference tool for medievalists.
