Join us as we celebrate the winners of the 2018 William Saroyan International Prize for Writing. Featuring readings and book signings by the two winners:Hernan Diaz for In the DistanceandRobert Moor for On Trails: An ExplorationRead about the 2018 Saroyan Prize winners and finalists. In the Distance by Hernan DiazA young Swedish immigrant finds himself penniless and alone in California. The boy travels east in search of his brother, moving on foot against the great current of emigrants pushing west. Driven back again and again, he meets naturalists, criminals, religious fanatics, swindlers, Indians, and lawmen, and his exploits turn him into a legend. Diaz defies the conventions of historical fiction and genre, offering a probing look at the stereotypes that populate our past and a portrait of radical foreignness. On Trails: An Exploration by Robert MoorWhile thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, Robert Moor began to wonder about the paths that lie beneath our feet: How do they form? Why do some improve over time while others fade? What makes us follow or strike off on our own? Over the course of seven years, Moor traveled the globe, exploring trails of all kinds, from the miniscule to the massive. He learned the tricks of master trail-builders, hunted down long-lost Cherokee trails, and traced the origins of our road networks and the Internet. In each chapter, Moor interweaves his adventures with findings from science, history, philosophy, and nature writing. Both books will be available for purchase at the event.
