Setting Up AFS Access

All the directories and files in the SULAIR Web space are stored in Stanford's AFS disk storage space. This document, which assumes you are using Dreamweaver MX 2004, explains how to map the main SULAIR AFS Web directory to a drive on your computer so you can transfer files between your local system and the SULAIR Web space. The SULAIR Web space consists of a "stage" server and a production server. You check out files to update, and preview new/changed files on the stage server (http://library-stage.stanford.edu/) before moving them to SULAIR's production server (http://library.stanford.edu/).

What You Will Need on Your Computer

This method of transferring files requires:

Be sure to read the Notes about system requirements and installation procedures before you install the software. You may need to update your system to meet the minimum requirements. You can check with your Expert Partner if you need assistance.

Mapping an AFS Drive

Once you've installed the required versions of Stanford Desktop Tools and Stanford OpenAFS on your computer, follow this procedure to make the SULAIR AFS directory hierarchy available on your system:

  1. Log in to Stanford Desktop Tools if you are not already logged in.
  2. Click on the Start button in the Windows Task Bar and then click on Control Panel to open the Control Panel window. (In Windows 2000, you have to choose Settings/Control Panel to open the Control Panel window.)
  3. Double-click the AFS Client Configuration icon to open the configuration dialog box.

  4. In the General tab, enter ir.stanford.edu in the Cell Name box and check Obtain AFS tokens when logging on to Windows, if it is not already checked.
  5. Click the Drive Letters tab.
  6. Click the Add... button, which appears at the bottom of the Drive Letters window, to open the Map Drive Letter dialog box.
  7. Enter the following string in the AFS Path box: \afs\ir\dept\SUL\WWW\library\stage
Note that this string uses backslashes.

Windows automatically selects the next available drive letter for you, and you may want to change this letter to avoid problems with some portable storage devices. The example shows Drive H:, but you might use some other letter later in the alphabet (e.g., Drive X:).
  8. In the Submount box, enter sulair_web.
  9. Check Restore this mapping whenever I log on to make sure the drive is always mapped the same way.
  10. Click the OK button. You should see the drive you mapped listed and checked in the Drive Letters box.

  11. Click the OK button to close the AFS Client Configuration dialog box.

To see if everything is set up correctly:

  1. Restart your computer. If Stanford Desktop Tools does not start automatically, you should launch it by clicking the Windows Start button and navigating to All Programs> Stanford> Desktop Tools> Stanford Desktop Tools.
  2. Double-click the My Computer icon on your Windows desktop.
You should see an entry for a Network Drive with a label that includes on 'afs'.

  3. Double-click the AFS drive entry.
You should see the directories and files in the "stage" directory hierarchy on the AFS server.

Note: You will not need to check this each time. Simply make sure Stanford Desktop Tools has been started before entering Dreamweaver. It may take a minute or so after you log in until the drive becomes available. If you see an error message, wait a couple of minutes and try again.

Setting Up Your Dreamweaver Site

  • If this is your first time setting up a Dreamweaver site, go to Setting Up Your Dreamweaver Site.
  • If you've already set up your Dreamweaver site, simply make the following changes in Dreamweaver:
  1. In the Site menu select Manage Sites.
  2. Select sulair_web from your list of sites and click on Edit....
  3. The Site Definition dialog box appears. In the Category list on the left, click on Remote Info.
  4. In the Remote Info dialog box enter:
    • Access: Select Local/Network from the dropdown menu.
    • Remote Folder: Enter the drive letter you have set up for AFS access, followed by a colon, followed by a backslash. The example below shows H:\, but yours may be a different letter.
    • Refresh remote file list automatically: Leave this option checked.
    • Check Enable file Check In and Check Out. Then type your full name (first and last) in the Check out name: field and type your email address in the Email address: field.
    • Leave Check out files when opening unchecked.
