Microfilm Collections in American Literary Studies

Many important resources for literary studies are not yet online and only to be found on Microfilm.  These collections are housed in the Media and Microtexts Center, on the Lower Level of Green East.

American literary annuals and gift books, 1825-1865
Between the 1820s and the 1850s appeared a number of yearly volumes in decorative bindings illustrated with high quality steel engravings which became known collectively as the "annuals." They featured contributions from many of the foremost writers and artists of the period. Not only do they include little-known contributions by well-known writers, but they also serve as a resource to the tastes and social attitudes of the times.
History of Women
This collection consists of microfilm of books, pamphlets, periodicals, manuscripts, and photographs through 1920, predominantly 19th-century material drawn from the collections of Smith and Radcliffe College. Also included are resources from other libraries on the settlement house movement, social reform in the late 19th century, the role of women in the settling of the American West, and Medieval and European women. Nineteenth-century English and American drama
A Microcard and Microfiche collection of over 6,000 plays produced in Britain and America during the nineteenth century. Genres included are serious plays, tragedies, historical dramas, parlor entertainments, comedies, comic operas, pantomimes, extravaganzas, satires, ballets, poetic dramas, amateur plays, black minstrel plays, adaptations of classical drama, melodrama and opera libretti. Resources from the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture
Microfilm collections from the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York Public Library. The Schomburg Center is a national research library devoted to documenting the history and experiences of peoples of African descent throughout the world. The collections cover a wide range of topics, including literary, social, and political history.
Three centuries of English and American Plays, 1500-1830
A collection of over 4,000 English-language plays published in England from 1516 through 1800 and in America from 1714 through 1830. The collection includes early editions and versions important for their textual variations. Several famous editions of Shakespeare's works are part of the collection, including those compiled by Malone and Rowe.
