Setting Up Your Dreamweaver Site

This document, which assumes you are using Dreamweaver MX 2004, describes how to set up a Dreamweaver site that you can use to edit and create files in the SULAIR Web space.

Before You Begin

Make sure you have a copy of Dreamweaver MX 2004 on your machine and that you have set up AFS Access. Check with your Expert Partner if you need help or join and send email to SULAIR's Dreamweaver Users' Group. The subject and body of the message will be ignored; your email will be added to the distribution list.

Setting Up Your Site

Your Dreamweaver site will consist of a local site (the space on your computer where you store your SULAIR Web files) and a remote site, the SULAIR stage server (http://library-stage.stanford.edu) where you check out your files (to your local site) for updating and preview your revised or new files before you move them to SULAIR's production server (http://library.stanford.edu).

To set up your Dreamweaver site:

  1. Start Dreamweaver and select the Site menu from the toolbar at the top of the screen and then select Manage Sites.
  2. The Manage Sites dialog box will appear; click on the New... button, and select Site from the dropdown menu.

  3. In the Site Definition dialog box that appears, select Local Info from the Category list on the left. Complete the rest of the dialog box as follows:
    • Site name: Give your local site a name of your choice, such as sulweb.
    • Local root folder: Enter the location on your computer where you wish to store your files. You can click on the file icon if you want to browse for a storage place on your computer rather than type one in. Do not leave it as unnamed site.
    • Leave Refresh local file automatically checked.
    • HTTP Address: enter http://library.stanford.edu/.
    • Leave Enable cache checked.

  5. From the Category list on the left select Remote Info. In the Remote Info dialog box that appears, complete the information as follows:
    • Access: Select Local/Network from the dropdown menu.
    • Remote Folder: Enter the drive letter you have set up for AFS access, followed by a colon, followed by a backslash. The example below shows H:\, but yours may be a different letter.
    • Refresh Remote File List Automatically: Check this option.
    • Enable File Check In and Check Out: Check this option.
    • Check Out Files when Opening: Uncheck this option.
    • Check Out Name: Enter your full name (first and last names).
    • Email Address: Enter your email address (emailaddress@stanford.edu).
  6. Click OK.

  7. If you get a screen at any point that says something to the effect that Dreamweaver cannot determine the time, click OK. It is not a problem.
