Using Your Dreamweaver Site
This document, which assumes you are using Dreamweaver MX 2004,
describes how to begin using the Dreamweaver site you set up to
edit and create files in the SULAIR Web space.
Before You Start
Make sure that you have set up AFS access
and you are connected to the server and that you have set
up your Dreamweaver site.
Starting Dreamweaver
Once you start Dreamweaver, you should be automatically connected
to the remote server, a connection made
when you set up your Dreamweaver site for the SULAIR Web space.
If not, check to make
sure you have Stanford Desktop Tools running.
You will see all the directories
(called "folders" in this document) on the remote server
in the Remote view. (The remote server is SULAIR's stage server,
where you check out files to update, and preview new/changed files.)
The best way to work on your files is to
see both the Remote view and the Local view list of folders and
files, using the double window display. (The Local view displays
the folders and files on your Local site.) Use the small icon
that looks like a two column table to toggle between the double
window display and the single window display. (This
icon is in the same toolbar as the connector icon, which is located
directly above the list of folders and files.)

Preparing Your Local Site
To prepare your Local Site on your computer, so you can update
and create files, you begin by moving the folder containing the
files you will be updating from the Remote Site to your Local
Site. Find your folder in the Remote Site list and click on the
plus mark next to it to select it. It will be highlighted.
In
this example, we will select the classics folder, which is located
in the depts folder. To access the classics folder,
you may have to click on the plus mark next to the depts folder,
so a list of sub-folders is displayed, including the classics
folder. Note:
Be very careful what you select; only select the folder you need. Although
you could download everything, don't (click on cancel if
you start to do that). You will not be able to change any files
that you don't have access to.

Use the Get icon (the green down arrow)
to download your folder (e.g., classics) onto your local site.
Dreamweaver will ask you if you wish to bring over the dependent
files. Click on Yes.

This should set up your local site with all the images, library
items, stylesheets, and templates you need. If for some reason
this does not happen, you can check with your Expert Partner, join
the Dreamweaver
Users Group and then send
email indicating your problem, or
ask a colleague who has used Dreamweaver.
Updating Files
To check out a file for updating, select
it in the Remote Site list and then click on the check out icon
(a green arrow with a check mark next to it) in
the toolbar at the top of the list. In this example, to select
the ill.html file, you would have to click on the plus
mark next to the depts folder, to display the list
of folders/files within that folder, find the classics folder in
the list and click on its plus mark, find ill.html in the resulting
list, and then click on the check out icon (the green arrow with
a check mark next to it) to check it out for updating.
Once you have checked out your
file, you can double-click on the file in your Local Site list
to open it and begin making your changes. Note that if you look
for your file in the lists for the Remote and Local
sites,
you will see a check mark next to it in both lists.

When you have finished making
changes to your file, use the check-in icon (a blue arrow
with a lock) to check your file back in to the Remote
Server. Note that the check mark next to your file in the Local
Site list will change to a lock.
Note: Whenever you start a session of editing,
check out the latest version from the Remote Site and be sure to
check it back in when you have completed your changes. If you leave
files checked out, any global changes to the SULAIR Web site cannot
be applied to them. In addition, others who may want to make changes
to the files will be unable to do so.
Moving Files to the Remote and Production Servers
- After you have checked your files back in to the Remote Server,
you can review them on the Web at http://library-stage.stanford.edu, before moving them to production.
- When you are ready to move your files to production, go to http://library.stanford.edu/filemove,
select the appropriate directory from the list (e.g., /dept/classics/)
and click on the Submit button.
