Mathematics & Statistics Library
Welcome to research at Stanford! This page is designed to serve as an introduction to research in mathematics and statistics at Stanford and provide an organized gateway to our research resources and tools.
Use SearchWorks, the online catalog for the Stanford University Libraries, to learn which books, journals, databases, and technical reports are owned by Stanford. SearchWorks is not the place to look for journal, magazine, or newspaper articles (use an article index or database for this).
There are two ways to search in SearchWorks: simple and advanced. Use the pull-down menu adjacent the search field to search by author, title, subject, call number, or series. Narrow your search by item type by selecting Format options left of the search field.
If you run into problems using the catalog, use "SearchWorks Help" or let us know by clicking on the "Feedback" button at the top of the page. Feedback is always welcome.
Use databases or article indexes to look for journal, magazine, or newspaper articles.
The topic guide Databases & article indexes by Linda Yamamoto summarizes article indexes most widely used in mathematics and statistics and provides a good starting point for research.
Find preprints and technical reports
The Front for the arXiv (UC Davis) automatically retrieves abstracts of new and revised articles in the e-print arXiv at Cornell and offers them for searching and browsing. The arXiv currently contains more than 65,000 articles in mathematics. Other subjects covered include statistics, physics, nonlinear sciences, quantitative biology, and computer science.
Visit our Technical reports page for information about finding reports, Stanford and other, in print and online.
Visit Stanford University Libraries' Find dissertations and theses topic guide for details about locating dissertations and theses completed at Stanford University and from other universities.
Find full-text resources online (books, conference proceedings, and journals)
SearchWorks, Stanford's online catalog, includes many, but not all, online resources available at Stanford. Limit your search to electronic resources by clicking "Online" under "Access" left of the search field.
Visit Stanford University Libraries' e-journals page to find online availability of journals owned by Stanford. Limit your search by title, subject, and/or subject subcategory.
Visit our E-books & digital projects page for a list of e-books, e-series, and digitally scanned resources in mathematics and statistics.
Manage citations and prepare bibliographies
Citation management tools help you collect, manage, and prepare bibliographies of your research sources.
Stanford University Libraries' Bibliography management page provides information for using bibliographic citation management tools, including RefWorks, EndNote, Zotero, and Mendeley.
