Guidelines

The primary purpose of the Stanford University Libraries is to serve the academic and research needs of Stanford faculty, students, and staff. Persons not currently members of the Stanford community may use some of the library's collections and facilities. Visitors must agree to voluntarily yield to the needs of the Stanford community when necessary, particularly when the library is very busy.

Before you arrive

First review our hours of operation. If you know in advance the item(s) in which you're interested, check SearchWorks, the online catalog for the Stanford University Libraries, to see whether we hold the item(s) and where they are shelved. Items shelved at SAL3 can be requested via the catalog to be sent to campus for your use. This typically takes one-two working days. SAL3 items can be checked out by those with borrowing privileges or retained in the library for use for up to seven days.

For alumni

Members of the Stanford Alumni Association have access to selected online databases through their SAA membership. These are not the same databases as the library subscriptions. Access to library subscribed databases is on the same footing as any member of the general public. For wireless access, members of the Stanford Alumni Association (SAA) can call (650) 725-0692 and ask for a guest sponsorship to use the wireless network on campus. A guest account allows the guest only to connect a wireless computer to the wireless network and provides no other network rights or services. For questions about SAA Membership and using online databases, please contact the Alumni Association at membership@stanfordalumni.org or phone (650) 725-0692

For other visitors

Visitors are welcome to use our public computers to access electronic resources, but please be aware that access to many of our resources is limited to current students, faculty, and staff.

Borrowing Cards are arranged through Access and privileges at Green Library. The Math & Statistics Library cannot issue borrowing cards.

Visitor wireless access

Please visit Stanford IT Services' Wireless Access for Stanford Visitors page for more information.  (Please note that library staff are not authorized to approve "Sponsored Guest" accounts.)

Excluded services

Visitors may not use the Reserve collections, interlibrary loan services, and databases or online book and journal resources if use is restricted to Stanford faculty, students, and staff (e.g., Elsevier/ScienceDirect).
