Anon. Fragment of a late fifteenth-century notated gradual leaf containing items from the Proper of the Mass.
2 pp. Ca. 186 x 270 mm. Parchment. 5 lines of text and music per page in black square notation on red four-line staves, rastrum ca. 15 mm. Decorative black capitals. Text underlay in Latin in a fine late Gothic bookhand. Unfoliated. From the Common of Saints of a noted gradual. Recto with the gradual "Domine praevenisti eum... " (verse and most of the respond), for the Common of Abbots (Graduale Romanum, p. 48; Liber usualis, p. 1207). Verso with portions of two Alleluias: "Alleluia posuisti domine super caput... " (Alleluia and most of the verse), for the Common of One Martyr, Paschal Time (LU, p. 1148; Karl-Heinz Schlager, Thematischer Katalog der ältesten Alleluia... , no. 46); and "Alleluia justus ut palma florebit... " (verse and final melisma of the Alleluia), for the Common of Abbots (LU 1206, Schlager, no. 167a). Former catalog number handstamped to blank right margin of recto, under which is written "Graduale 149... " in an early modern hand. From the collection of the noted pianist Jacob Lateiner (1928-2010). Slightly soiled and stained; trimmed; some creasing, especially to left portion; remnants of adhesive along right edge of verso, slightly affecting music; small perforation to blank upper margin; verso slightly rubbed and with several lines and text and 1603 and 1604 overwritten in outer margins in an early 17th-century hand.
