OTHER

Gerd Stern Archive

Gerd Stern is a poet, sculptor, interlocutor of “inner space” and pioneer in the field of multi-media. Stern was a part of USCO, an influential art collective working in North American in the 1960s and found himself in the court of some of the most revolutionary artists and thinkers of his day including the composer Harry Partch and poet Allen Ginsberg. Primary documents include hundreds of letters between Stern and key collaborators, and detailed blue prints and diagrams employed in the design and presentation of USCO’s light and sound installations. Also included are hundreds of unique pieces of ephemera (original USCO flyers, posters and related publications).

The archive contains the Gerd Stern – Harry Partch Collection (1952-1963), personal letters between Stern and Partch, in addition to various programs and Harry Partch Fund ephemera. Stern was part of a group that helped to form a trust fund to record Partch’s Plectra and Percussion Dances (1953). He also served as manager for the Harry Partch Trust, which funded the recording and issue of Partch’s second LP Oedipus. The Harry Partch Trust Correspondence Files (1954 – 1993) include 46 letters, mostly of correspondence between Stern and Partch.
