Ukraine maps: territorial expansion, languages
by Karen Rondestvedt

The ongoing crisis with Russian separatists and Russia has put Ukraine very much in the news recently. The crisis may be easier to understand when viewed in context.

This small exhibit, now open in the Green Library East lobby, seeks to illustrate some of that context. In the center are two maps: (1) the shifting borders during approximately the first half of the 20th century, and (2) the mosaic of languages currently spoken in the country.

by Malgorzata Schaefer

After 37 years of service, Irene Jones has retired from Stanford University Libraries.

Fluent in Russian, Ukrainian, and German, she served as a German translator during the latter years of living in a refugee camp in Austria from 1945-1952. Her language skills were invaluable when Irene began work at the Hoover Institution as a 50%FTE Library Specialist, specializing in Slavic Serials. Her responsibilities included working with a few hundred titles published in Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, Czechoslovakian, Bulgarian, Belarusian, and Yugoslavian/Serbo-Croatian.

Are you a staff member who likes to interact with people? Does your voice project well? Do you have some flexibility in your workday? Would you like to join a group of tour volunteers?

Volunteers would be called upon to lead one-hour tours of Green Library throughout the year for librarians, university administrators, and others from various countries or U.S. institutions. Tours typically are scheduled between 10am – 5pm. All volunteers will be given training and resources.
