Author Rebecca Solnit published “An Island Is Anything Surrounded By Difference: Thoughts on Maps and History” on the website of the The Bill Lane Center for the American West, where she was a visiting researcher in the Winter and Spring of 2013, exploring Stanford's newly acquired collection of historic maps that curiously depict California as an island off the West coast of North America.

The Stanford Libraries will be operating on a reduced schedule during Winter Intersession and during the Stanford University Winter Closure period.

Closures and reduced library hours for:
Winter Intersession, December 15-21, 2013
Week of December 22-28, 2013
Week of December 29, 2013-January 4, 2014

A few libraries will be open reduced hours on January 5. All libraries will resume regular hours on January 6. See week of January 5-11, 2014 for details.

If you will be away from campus during the holiday period, remember to set up your browser for off-campus access to library resources.

Because of the University's Winter Closure from Monday, December 23, 2013 through Friday, January 3, 2014, articles submitted for the SUL News page will be published on the following schedule:

  • Articles submitted by 11:00 am, Wednesday, December 18 will be reviewed and published by December 18. An email announcement listing recent articles will be distributed on that day.
  • Any articles submitted after the announcement email on December 18 - January 3, will be reviewed and published on Monday, January 6, 2014.

The next SUL News email announcement listing recent articles will be distributed on Wednesday, January 8, 2014.
