Contemplation by Design logo

Contemplation by Design (CBD) is a campus-wide, multidisciplinary event designed to encourage all members of the Stanford community to enjoy the power of the pause.

From November 3 – 11, 2016, free events will be offered all around campus that further balance, tranquility and creative excellence. Faculty, staff and students will have the opportunity to take a short break from their high-level output of productivity and innovation in order to rest and renew the mind-body-spirit.

SUL Rosette

The Director’s office is welcoming Huey-Ning Tan in the role of Administrator to the Chief of Staff and Budget Officer.  Huey-Ning will be supporting SUL Facilities; SUL’s Chief of Staff, Mimi Calter; and SUL’s Budget Officer, Susan Horsfall; and will be assisting with both grant processing and reporting. Huey-Ning comes to the Director’s office from the Visual Resources Center. We’re very happy to have her aboard!

In this presentation, Merilin Piipuu will examine Estonian public media discussions surrounding the Museum of Occupations’ plan to refocus its permanent exhibit and rename the institution as the Museum of Freedom. She also will analyze the reception of the museum’s initiative to show a temporary exhibit about gay history in the Soviet Union. Piipuu will situate these initiatives in the historical context of Estonia and other former Soviet Union countries as well as in the memories of different generations and marginalized groups in Estonia, asking how these latter fit into a narrative of suffering.
