Catherine M. Tierney

It is with admiration, great respect and a certain sadness that I announce the retirement of Catherine “Cath” Tierney from Stanford Libraries effective 31 October 2014. Cath joined Stanford Libraries 28 years ago and has been a strategic force in our revolution ever since.

Cath’s library career spans 42 years. After 14 years establishing her career at Boston University, she leapt at the chance to make a dramatic change in her life- to accept a junior position at Stanford. She and her husband, Bill, whom many might remember from his days in Library Systems, saw the open road and took it. While at SUL, Cath’s contributions have been significant and have made this library system better and stronger as a result.

Philip Evan Schreur

It is with great enthusiasm that I announce the appointment of Philip Evan Schreur, currently Head of the Metadata Department, as Interim Assistant University Librarian for Technical and Access Services following the retirement of Catherine M. Tierney. Phil is an expert in modern and emerging metadata standards and issues. Furthermore, he comes with Catherine Tierney’s strong endorsement for his ability to undertake this new role without missing a beat.

Cubberley Education Library has developed a series of orientation modules for incoming students available on the Stanford University Libraries YouTube channel. We created these videos because of faculty interest in online instruction and response to student feedback about the deluge of information provided to them during orientation.

Students have access to Stanford resources starting August 1. However, some, especially masters students, need to start their research as soon as possible. The hope was that if we could supply them with all the information they need to get to these resources, the students could begin their exploration even before they arrive on campus.
