The
following provisions govern the award of the 2005 competition for
the William Saroyan International Prize for Writing:
- Stanford
University Libraries on the recommendation of The Saroyan Writing Prize
Committee intends to award two prizes of $12,500 each: one prize for
a newly-published work of fiction, and one prize for a newly-published
work of non-fiction. The Committee shall comprise the Stanford University
Librarian, the President of the William Saroyan Foundation, and any
others appointed by these two.
- Nominating
jurors for the prize are appointed by the Committee. They are invited
to exercise their independent and collective judgment and submit three
nominations. The jurors are advised that their nominations are for the
information and advice of The Prize Committee only inasmuch as the Committee
is charged with the responsibility and authority to select, accept,
substitute or reject these nominations, and may in extraordinary circumstances
offer its own. The nominating jury shall submit to the Committee three
nominations.

Entries
must be received or postmarked by U.S. Mail on or before 31 January
2005.
- Competition
for the Prize is limited to works published during the preceding calendar
years January 2003-December 2004.
- Nothing
in this plan shall be deemed to limit in any way the authority and control
of The Saroyan Writing Prize Committee.
- Except
for members of The Saroyan Writing Prize Committee, the William Saroyan
Foundation, or previous winners, any author's published work is eligible
for consideration.
- The
winning entries will be announced and awarded at a special event at
Stanford University in July of 2005.
- Finalists
and prizewinners of the Prize will be listed permanently at this website
