Access and circulation

The Robin Li and Melissa Ma Science Library is open to both the Stanford community and visitors. All Stanford faculty, students, and staff are provided full reference and circulation services. Visitors are welcome to use the library, but are not eligible for reference assistance. Visitors have full use of the print collection and selected e-resources but may not check out materials unless they purchase a library card. Contact the Privileges Desk at Green Library, (650) 723-1492 or sul-privileges@stanford.edu, for information on becoming a registered borrower and obtaining a valid library card.

Borrowing privileges

Stanford faculty, students, and staff have full privileges according to the library’s circulation policy. Users with purchased privileges may borrow all items except for course reserves. Purchased privileges do not include access to licensed software or off-campus access to digital resources.

Library privileges may be blocked due to fines, fees, lost books, invalid mailing addresses, a registration hold, or expired ID cards. Privileges are blocked when library fines, fees, or bills reach: $50 for students; $300 for faculty; $1.50 or with any overdue book for institutional fee-based borrowers. For more information, please see the Access and privileges page.

Renewals

Users with a current SUNet ID and a Stanford ID card may renew books online twice (faculty, three times) using My Account unless another user has placed a hold. Once that limit is reached, renewals must be in person at the owning library with Stanford ID card and item(s) in hand. Journals and media are renewable once online. Reserve items may be renewed in person only.

No email or phone renewals are accepted.

Institutional fee-based users must renew items at the owning library.

Returning materials

Please return all reserve items to the Science Library. Other library materials may be returned to any Stanford University library. Items returned to Lane Medical Library remain checked out to the borrower until they are received and discharged at the Science Library.

If you plan on leaving the area for an extended period of time, make sure to return your library materials before you leave. Exceptions cannot be made if a book is recalled while you are away. For more information, please see the Borrower responsibilities page.

Holds/recalls

All items are subject to recall if requested by another user. All recalled items must be returned by the due date on the notice. You can view and/or cancel holds and recalls using MyAccount or by visiting a circulation desk. For more information, please see Stanford University Libraries’ Holds and recalls page.

Overdues, bills, and notices

You'll receive a recall notice when a library or another borrower needs an item you've checked out. You must return the recalled item by the due date on the notice (you'll have one week). If the item is needed for Course Reserves, it must be returned immediately. Fines begin accruing as soon as the due date passes. After 14 days, you'll receive a bill for replacement of the item and your borrowing account may be blocked until you return (or pay for) the item. For more information, please see the Borrower responsibilities page.
