Data Services

Data specialists provide support for Stanford's faculty, staff and students who wish to access local and virtual social science data resources for research and instruction. In-person consultations take place during scheduled walk-in hours or by appointment in The Velma Denning Room, located in the Green Library Bing Wing.

Virtual Resources

Stanford is a member of ICPSR (Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research) and the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research. DEWI (Data Extraction Web Interface) is a Web-based application for accessing social science numeric data. It incorporates codebook information, allowing users to search datasets by keywords and select variables for sub-setting and extraction. Users can save custom-made datasets on their own computer desktop in a variety of formats compatible with popular statistical analysis software. Detailed help with DEWI is available from the 'Help' tab once you enter the system.

Local Resources

Local resources in The Velma Denning Room include numeric data on CD-ROM, available on computers or installed on request, and a reference library of codebooks, CD-ROM user documentation, and selected journals and magazines.
