Cardinal Francis Arinze
Cardinal Arinze was on a short list of candidates to succeed Pope John Paul II. April 21, 2005 he was confirmed as Cardinal, Prefect of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.* He was also President of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue.

* According to information from www.catholic-hierarchy.org, a non-offiical site by David Cheney * Cardinal Arinze resigned as Prefect of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments April 2, 2005 and became Cardinal, Prefect Emeritus.Mr. Cheney notes that "Almost all prefects of curial departments lose their jobs upon the death of the pope." Thus there are a large number of curial resignations dated 2 April. "Once a new pope is selected, he has the option (and often does) to reinstate the previous officials."
