Atlapedia Online
Basic information for African countries (collected from a number of printed sources). Includes a brief history for each country but it only covers up to 1993. They publish a more extensive print version. Read the Legal Notice. Put in the name of a place and the database provides country, longitude, latitude. From the Getty Information Institute, Los Angeles, California.

Global Population Distribution Database
"This project has provided a population database depicting the worldwide distribution of population in a 1X1 latitude/longitude grid system. The database is unique, firstly, in that it makes use of the most recent data available (1990). Secondly, it offers true apportionment for each grid cell....." The database, by Yi-Fan Li, consists of 3 datasets compiled in dBase IV format. It was prepared for the UN Environment Programme. Table with population by country:
