Appointments required for research to resume in libraries

As the university plans for the phased re-opening of research on campus, labs and libraries are carefully preparing buildings in order to maintain safe environments for faculty, students, and staff.

During Stage 1, Stanford Libraries will require all researchers to make appointments for entry into Cecil H. Green Library in order to avoid crowds entering the Library and thus violating the requirement for social distancing.  Access to Green Library will be limited to current members of the Stanford faculty and matriculated graduate students, both sets of researchers equipped with current Stanford ID cards.  Access to Special Collections will also require appointments.

All faculty and graduate students must adhere to the following guidelines when visiting Green Library. Please note that these requirements can change as university and county/state guidelines evolve.

BEFORE VISITING GREEN LIBRARY:

DAY OF APPOINTMENT

  • Use the Health Check app to self-report your health status prior to coming onsite to campus each day.

  • Follow the guidance provided by Health Check.
☐ Do not come to work onsite if you are sick or feeling unwell.
☐ If you are sick or feel unwell, follow Stanford guidance and contact your primary care provider as needed.

  • Wear a face covering while on campus and inside Green Library at all times.

  • Rigorous hand washing is expected frequently while you are in Green Library.

  • Plan to arrive at the east entrance of Green Library (nearest Coupa Cafe) during your appointment window and follow queue instructions for building entry.

  • All faculty carrels, dissertation carrels, and formerly group study rooms are single occupancy only.

  •  Adhere to physical distancing guidelines (6 feet) and population density limits as set by the Libraries while inside Green Library.

  • Do not move chairs or other furniture which have been purposefully positioned to adhere to social distancing guidelines.

  • There will be abundant signs and indicators to help you remain safe and to respect the safety of other researchers re-opening their own research in the Library.

Material due dates extended to June 12.

In response to the Bay Area shelter-in-place order, library buildings are closed, and most library services have moved online. To accommodate both the closure, we are extending the loan periods to June 12, 2020 for items with outstanding due dates. As of now, due dates after June 12, 2020 remain unchanged. Stanford Libraries will forgive all fees and fines that may have accrued starting March 1, 2020 and until the Libraries are ready to re-open. Fees and fines accrued prior to March 1, 2020 are not part of the forgiveness plan.

If you wish to return materials before June 12, you are welcome to do so by mail. However, please be aware that returns will not be processed until library staff can safely return to campus. Materials returned by mail will remain visible in your account until staff return to campus and check them back in.

We recommend, if you chose to return materials, that you use a carrier that allows you to track and insure the materials.  Please send materials to the following address:

Attn: Book Return

Cecil H. Green Library Circulation Desk

557 Escondido Mall

Stanford, CA 94305-6063

To check the status of your items on loan, please visit your library account. If you have questions about it, you may respond to this email or use the Contact Us link from MyAccount.

As the Libraries continue to monitor the situation, we will notify you should the situation change.

All library buildings are now closed in response to the Bay Area shelter in place order.

We continue to monitor the developing situation, and do not anticipate opening before the regional order is lifted on April 7, 2020.

While our buildings are closed, we will still be providing virtual support. Learn how to connect to e-resources and remote reference. Our subject specialists also remain available to assist you.

As a reminder, requests for Interlibrary Loans, holds, recalls, and paging of stored materials is not available. Book drops are also closed at this time. We have extended due dates for library materials so borrowers will not accumulate fines.

Thank you for your continued patience and support at this time.

Effective, Thursday, March 19 Stanford Libraries will be physically closed until March 30.

While our buildings are closed, we will still be providing virtual support. Learn how to connect to e-resources and remote reference.

As a reminder, requests for Interlibrary Loans, holds, recalls, and paging of stored materials is not available and due dates for library materials have been extended.

Last updated: March 14 at 5:00pm

The Libraries will be reducing hours starting Monday, March 16 to accommodate our reduced staffing plan.

The current hours effective March 16 will be:

  • Green Library: M-F 10am-6pm
  • All branches:   M-F 1-5pm

Since the Libraries' doors opened in 1891, we have served as a safe and encouraging space for the Stanford community. We will continue in this capacity, until it becomes impossible to do so.

Last updated: March 13, 2020 at 5:00pm

Due to current constraints of library resources, Stanford Libraries will not be accepting requests for Interlibrary Loans, holds, recalls, and paging of stored materials.

The libraries are extending due dates of library materials so library users can avoid fines while remote instruction is being implemented.

Please note, hours displayed by Google often do not reflect the most recent changes to schedules and should not be a trusted resource at this time. The Stanford Libraries' hours page is updated to reflect changes across all libraries, including to the best of our knowledge the libraries for medicine, law, business, and Hoover, which are managed by their schools.

Our libraries will remain open March 16-20, but will have limited hours. Green Library will be open this weekend, March 14 and 15, and will suspend weekend hours effective March 21. Branch libraries will only be open Monday-Friday, until further notice.

Since this situation continues to evolve rapidly, we strongly recommend graduate students and faculty with library carrels come in the week of March 16-20 to collect materials that are essential for their research and preparation of draft articles, books, and dissertations. We cannot guarantee that we will be given advance notice should we need to reduce the Libraries open hours further..

Our reference librarians are providing virtual support. They are available to members of the Stanford community using remote reference Monday-Friday 10am-5pm.

Changes to weekend hours for branches

  • Effective Saturday, March 14, all branch libraries will close on weekends. Green Library will remain open for graduate, international, or remaining undergraduate students in search of a place to study.

  • Starting Saturday, March 21, all libraries will be closed on weekends, including Green Library.

Bing Wing Entrance to close

Starting tomorrow, Thursday, March 12, access to Green Library will be limited to the East portal entrance. The West portal entrance in the Bing Wing will become an emergency exit only. If you are accustomed to using the Bing Wing for morning entrance or evening exit, please adjust your routine and begin using the East entrance by Coupa Cafe.

Library leadership is working with staff to develop a service model to support the university’s announcement yesterday that instruction will be moved online for the start of spring quarter.  We will update this page with more information as it becomes available.

Current hours + access

It remains our goal to operate our public services as close to regular hours as possible the week of March 9, including the weekend. Some branches have modified hours even this week and all our libraries will have reduced hours beginning March 16. All Libraries will be closed on weekends effective 21 March. Please check libraries hours frequently as hours can change depending on local developments.

Some libraries are modifying seating to comply with the CDCs recommendation of 6 feet social distancing.

Valid Stanford ID cardholders continue to have access to the Libraries. Unfortunately, at this time visitors, those accessing federal government documents in the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP), and non-university issued card holder access is restricted.

This page will be updated to reflect the latest information on library services. We apologize for any inconvenience that results from the COVID-19 pandemic and thank you in advance for your understanding of our efforts to keep the safety of our community first in our decisions.

Visitor policy

For the immediate future and until further notice, Stanford Libraries will remain open only for valid Stanford ID card holders. Those wishing to enter ANY of the Libraries without a valid Stanford ID card will not be granted access. This is necessary in the light of the dramatic reductions in events and other measures taken by the university to limit the number of visitors to campus.

For those with need for access to Federal government documents in the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP), please contact James Jacobs (jrjacobs AT stanford DOT edu), Federal government information librarian.

Hours of operation

We are making every effort to limit disruption to library operations for members of the Stanford community before Spring Break commences.

Currently, the only change to hours of operation will be for Monday, March 9. All libraries will open publicly at 10am to allow staff to return from the weekend and prepare for the week ahead. Intersession hours are expected to commence effective March 16, but could go into effect sooner. The Stanford Libraries' hours page will remain updated to reflect changes across all libraries, including to the best of our knowledge the libraries for medicine, law, business, and Hoover, which are managed by their schools. We encourage you to check their webpages for additional information about service changes and hours of operation.

The Office of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs announced the 24-hour study space and Learning Hub will remain closed until in-person instruction resumes.

As a reminder, authorized Stanford Libraries users can connect to e-resources from any location with internet access.

Health and safety

We have increased custodial care for our Libraries, and strongly encourage our users to follow guidelines by the CDC to prevent the spread of the cold/flu and COVID-19, including frequent hand-washing for at least 20 seconds and maintaining the recommended 6 feet guidance for social distancing while in the Libraries and elsewhere on campus.
