"MRP – 50"
Estonian SSR, 1989This cardboard poster depicts the Soviet hammer and sickle and Nazi swastika logos with swapped diagonal elements (i.e., the top-right and bottom-left parts of the swastika have swapped position with the Soviet hammer). The poster reads "MRP – 50" referring to the 50th anniversary of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. This poster was one of many displayed on cars headed to the Baltic Way demonstration on August 23rd 1989. It was made by experimental factory "BIT," which specialized in advertisement banners. The date for the protest was set for the 50th anniversary of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact to draw attention to its secret protocol which divided Eastern Europe between the Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union states. As a result of the demonstration, the USSR recognized the existence of the pact's secret protocol and declared them null and void on 24th December 1989.
