  1. Discerning the spirits : theological and ethical hermeneutics in Paul

    Munzinger, André, 1972-
Cambridge, UK ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 2007.

Andre Munzinger investigates St. Paul's understanding of ethical and theological knowledge and how to 'discern the will of God'. He offers insights from philosophy, psychology and sociology as well as from New Testament perspectives. How did Paul determine ethical and theological truth? Were all believers expected to be able to 'discern the spirits' (1 Corinthians 12.10)? This 2007 study shows that discernment must be understood against the backdrop of an extensive hermeneutic, by which Paul inherently relates ethical and theological knowledge. Understanding the will of God requires noetic and existential transformation, in short, the 'renewal of the mind' (Romans 12.2). Munzinger argues that Paul implies a process of inspiration in which the Spirit sharpens the discerning functions of the mind because the believer is liberated from a value system dominated by status and performance. The love of God enables all believers to learn to interpret reality in a transformed manner and to develop creative solutions to questions facing their communities. For Paul authentic discernment is linked to a comprehensive sense of meaning.

  2. Agape, eros, gender [electronic resource] : towards a Pauline sexual ethic

    Watson, Francis, 1956-
Cambridge : Cambridge University Press, 2000.

Issues of gender and sexuality have recently come to the fore in all humanities disciplines, and this book reflects this broad interdisciplinary situation, although its own standpoint is broadly theological. In contrast to many contemporary feminist theologies, gender and sexuality (eros) are here understood within a distinctively Christian context characterized by the reality of agape - the New Testament's term for the comprehensive divine-human love that includes the relationship of man and woman within its scope. The central problem is concern with key Pauline texts relating to gender and sexuality (1 Cor. 11, Rom. 7, Eph. 5), texts whose influence on western theology and culture has been enduring and pervasive. They are read here in conjunction with later theological and non-theological texts that reflect that influence - ranging from Augustine and Barth to Virginia Woolf, Freud and Irigaray.

  3. Reinventing Paul [electronic resource]

    Gager, John G.
Oxford ; New York : Oxford University Press, 2000.

Throughout the Christian era, Paul has stood at the centre of controversy, accused of being the father of Christian anti-Semitism. But have we misunderstood the man and his teachings for 2000 years? This study challenges this entrenched view of Paul, arguing persuasively that Paul's words have been taken out of their original context, distorted and generally misconstrued. The author takes us in search of the "real" Paul, using Paul's own writings. Through an exhaustive analysis of Paul's letters to the Galatians and the Romans, he provides illuminating answers to the key questions: Did Paul repudiate the Law of Moses? Did he believe that Jews had been rejected by God and replaced as the chosen people by Gentiles? Did he consider circumcision to be necessary for salvation? And did he expect Jews to find salvation through Jesus? To all these questions, John Gager answers no. First, he puts Paul's proselytizing in context. Paul was an apostle to the Gentiles, not the Jews.
