  1. High-pressure crystallography : from fundamental phenomena to technological applications

    Dordrecht : Springer, ©2010.

This book is devoted to the theme of crystallographic studies at high pressure, with emphasis on the phenomena characteristic to the compressed state of matter, as well as experimental and theoretical techniques used to study these phenomena. As a thermodynamic parameter, pressure is remarkable in many ways. In the visible universe its value spans over sixty orders of magnitude, from the non-equilibrium pressure of hydrogen in intergalactic space, to the kind of pressure encountered within neutron stars. In the laboratory, it provides the unique possibility to control the structure and properties of materials, to dramatically alter electronic properties, and to break existing, or form new chemical bonds. This agenda naturally encompasses elements of physics (properties, structure and transformations), chemistry (reactions, transport), materials science (new materials) and engineering (mechanical properties); in addition it has direct applications and implications for geology (minerals in deep Earth environments), planetary sciences, biology and medicine.

  2. Reactivity of molecular solids

Chichester ; New York : John Wiley & Sons, c1999.

In the past 30 years, Russian scientists have generated large volumes of fundamental research in the field of solid-state reactions, crucial to the development of new materials. Presented by one of Russia's leading solid state chemists, this book reviews some of the more interesting material that has come to light. Both organic and inorganic solid systems are discussed, with some chapters devoted to reactions in organic solids.

  3. Amorphous drugs : benefits and challenges

    Rams-Baron, Marzena
    Cham, Switzerland : Springer, [2018]

This book explains theoretical and technological aspects of amorphous drug formulations. It is intended for all those wishing to increase their knowledge in the field of amorphous pharmaceuticals. Conversion of crystalline material into the amorphous state, as described in this book, is a way to overcome limited water solubility of drug formulations, in this way enhancing the chemical activity and bioavailability inside the body. Written by experts from various fields and backgrounds, the book introduces to fundamental physical aspects (explaining differences between the ordered and the disordered solid states, the enhancement of solubility resulting from drugs amorphization, physical instability and how it can be overcome) as well as preparation and formulation procedures to produce and stabilize amorphous pharmaceuticals. Readers will thus gain a well-funded understanding and find a multi-faceted discussion of the properties and advantages of amorphous drugs and of the challenges in producing and stabilizing them. The book is an ideal source of information for researchers and students as well as professionals engaged in research and development of amorphous pharmaceutical products. This book explains theoretical and technological aspects of amorphous drug formulations.
