  3. Destruction of Admiral Cervera's Fleet at Santiago de Cuba, July 3rd, 1898

    A first edition of a chromolithograph by Xanthus Smith of Schley's flagship, the Brooklyn, destroying the Spanish Fleet. Although Smith was not present at the battle depicted in this print, he based the image on his own Naval experiences, as well as the accounts printed in the newspapers at the time. This naval battle was attributed to Sampson, but was actually directed by Rear Admiral Schley at the time because Sampson was on shore meeting with General Schafter. This was one of a series of patriotic chromolithographs celebrating the Spanish-American War, and produced by Joseph Hoover & Sons of Philadelphia from 1898 through 1900. This is the variant image which does not include a lozenge inset portrait of Admiral Schley, but is about an inch taller than the other image. At the end of the 19th Century, the Hoover printing firm was one of the largest producers of chromolithographs in the country, printing Currier & Ives Images and others.
