    Two women in eighteenth century Paris, the Princess of Bouillon (Heather Begg) and Adriana Lecouvreur, a famous actress at the Comédie-française (Joan Sutherland) are both in love with the same man, Maurizio, actually the Count of Saxony (Anson Austin). Inevitably there is a jealous exchange in public between the women and the Princess determines to poison her rival using toxic powder dusted on a bunch of violets. Adriana, thinking the flowers are those previously given to her by her lover, sniffs the poison and shortly thereafter, dies in her lover's arms.
