"Cultural property is a broad concept that includes movable and immovable objects of cultural significance, whether natural or manmade, such as paintings, prehistoric tools, monuments, buildings, or geological formations. It also includes intangible cultural expressions, such as oral histories, rituals, and music. Throughout history, cultural property has been removed from its cultural context by thieves, collectors, and conquering armies for the purpose of exploiting its commercial value or to demoralize the enemy. Cultural property has also been directly targeted during bombardment or irreparably harmed when belligerents have focused on military objectives proximate to such property. In modern times, issues such as urbanization and climate change have created new threats to cultural property. While both fine art and artifacts are cultural property, there are some important distinctions between them. Fine art's location is typically known, and it is unique and easily identifiable, which makes it easier to recover in the event of theft. In contrast, artifacts might be examples of generic products, and many are as yet undiscovered. Their existence and locations may be unknown, making their recovery all but impossible it they are moved. Moreover, moving artifacts from their original location may damage them and erode their educational value, as their significance must be assessed in relation to other artifacts found in the same area" --
