Detention at the police station under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984
Brown, DavidLondon : H.M.S.O., 1989.The Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 made major changes to the statutory context of policing in England and Wales, aiming to achieve a more satisfactory balance between the powers of the police and the rights of those arrested. This report addresses the need for information about the way in which the new procedures are working, and is intended to provide a database on a number of aspects of detention at the police station. The report points to considerable differences between police stations in the take-up of legal advice, proportions of detainees charged and time in custody. It suggests that a closer examination of these variations and the processes underlying them must form part of any agenda for further research on the Act.
